Since September 11th I discovered that it's important to keep things in perspective... I began this site to share lyrics to songs and create images that we could embrace as we struggled to cope with the attack on our country that we were so emotionally unprepared to deal with. So I occasionally may sound flippant, or 'tongue-in-cheek' and this is my attempt at trying not taking life so seriously. I hope this doesn't offend anyone and I apologize in advance if it does. When I awoke September 11, 2001 little did I know how much I would appreciate my country, and all it stood for, before noon. Shortly before heading to work, I saw that a plane that had crashed into the World Trade Center and thought haphazardly, 'How horrible! How the heck did that happen?' Shortly thereafter, I saw the second plane purposely hit the WTC. I stood staring at the television; my knees turned to jello. Although my entire body went limp, I continued on my way to work... because that's what you do. Because after you go numb auto-pilot kicks in. As I drove to the John Hancock building where I work, I looked at it's splendor from Chicago's beautiful Lake Shore Drive on that blue-skied sunny day, and uttered the most unbelievable words I'd ever said to myself, "I don't feel safe going to work." I looked at the people in the other cars. Did they know yet? Did they have friends or relatives at the WTC? Oh my God, what are we all going to do?! About a half hour after I got to work, they evacuated the building... A blaring siren filled the air as we all hurried for the exits. Outside everyone was on their cell phones... those that could get through anyway. I couldn't until I was a few miles north... needless to say, my mother was very relieved to hear my voice. In the hours to come songs like "God Bless the USA," "America the Beautiful," and "The Star Spangled Banner" -- and all patriotic music - would help nurse my wounds somehow. Everyone mourns differently; everyone has had to deal with this Music seems to bring us all together. So I spent that first week, and days and weeks after, compiling lyrics to some popular patriotic songs, in hopes that they may bring some comfort to myself and others. I, like many of us, spent hours looking at the photos. This could not be real! Our America ... Our country ... Our home! Had our prairies, our purple mountains, our lands blessed by God... Our freedom and our very existence... really been threatened -- attacked?! This must be some horrible dream. We looked at all the devastation and waited to wake up; to be let out of our terrible nightmare. As I poured over the hundreds of pictures, it comforted me to make the graphics you'll see along with the song lyrics. These graphics are made from images I found at various sites online and apologize if I infringed on any copyrights. I created these images to illustrate my personal feelings about the horrific attack on our homeland.
